OPTIONAL Season-end Skills Tournament Rules 
 

GENERAL RULES

  • Team participation is optional
  • Minimum of 3 players needed for a team to participate
  • 8 ft basket
  • 4 team-oriented skills
  • Prizes for all players present for the top 2 teams with the most points in a session
  • In the event of a team tie at the end of tournament skills
    • tied teams have 5 players shoot 1 free throw & best score wins

 

PLAYER PARTICIPATION

  • Players arriving late cannot make up skills already completed by his/her team
  • Number of turns per event depends on the largest team present.  For example, if 4 teams are competing, 3 teams have 5 players, one has 6.  Each event will have 6 turns (when appropriate for the event) and one person from each of the teams of 5 will have to go twice.

 

SCORING

  • 1st place – 8 points
  • 2nd place – 6 points
  • 3rd place – 5 points
  • 4th place – 3 points

SKILL #1 -- SPEED DRIBBLE LEFT HAND WITH BOUNCE PASS

 

  • Timed event – how long for all players to complete the course
    • clock stops on last pass by last player when caught by next player at the starting line
  • Speed dribble LEFT hand
  • Length of playing court
  • Teams go 2 at a time
  • Passing cone set at Free Throw distance (1st grade: 8 ft, 2nd grade 10 ft)
  • COURSE
    • Speed dribble LEFT to far cone (3/4 length of the court)
    • Dribble around the cone
    • Speed dribble LEFT back to a cone (1/4 length from start)
    • BOUNCE pass to next teammate
  • INFRACTIONS – 1 second added to team time
    • Player doesn’t dribble LEFT
    • Player doesn’t go around the end cone
    • Player doesn’t use a bounce pass
  • In case of a tie, head to head competition with 3 players per team

 
SKILL #2 -- SPEED DRIBBLE RIGHT HAND WITH CHEST PASS
 

  • Timed event – how long for all players to complete the course
    • clock stops on last pass by last player when caught by next player at the starting line
  • Speed dribble RIGHT hand
  • Length of playing court
  • Teams go 2 at a time
  • Passing cone set at Free Throw distance (1st grade: 8 ft, 2nd grade 10 ft)
  • COURSE
    • Speed dribble RIGHT to far cone (3/4 length of the court)
    • Dribble around the cone
    • Speed dribble RIGHT back to a cone (1/4 length from start)
    • CHEST pass to next teammate
  • INFRACTIONS – 1 second added to team time
    • Player doesn’t dribble RIGHT
    • Player doesn’t go around the end cone
    • Player doesn’t use a chest pass
  • In case of a tie, head to head competition with 3 players per team

 

 SKILL #3 -- DRIBBLE WITH LAY-UP

 

  • Timed event – 1 minute – each hand (for total of 2 minutes)
    • Players must stay in order, but can go multiple times
    • Cone placed approximately ½ way down the court
    • Next player in line can go once the player in front of them reaches the cone
    • Get as many layups as possible
    • Must speed dribble back to end of line to go again (i.e., no running with the ball)
  • Length of playing court
  • Each player has a ball
  • Dribble either hand
  • Teams go 2 at a time, at different baskets
  • Lay-up MUST hit the backboard to count
    • Can shoot left or right handed
  • Rebound own shot – 1 shot only
  • Infractions – shot doesn’t count
    • Player doesn’t start at the first cone
    • Player doesn’t use the backboard
    • Player doesn’t speed dribble back after shot

 

SKILL #4 -- FREE THROWS

 

  • Numbered shots – 2 shots per player per team
  • – 1st grade: 8 ft, 2nd grade 10 ft
  • Every player gets 1 warm-up shot
  • After all teams complete, if there is a tie…
    • Tied Teams send 2 players for shoot off
    • Each player gets 1 shot
    • If still tied, continue shooting 1 shot until a winner
  • Each team gets equal number of shots

 
 

NON-SCORING SKILL -- SHOOTING KNOCK-OUT

  • Non-team scoring event
  • All players can participate
  • Shots taken from foul line designated in free throws (1st grade: 8 ft, 2nd grade 10 ft)
  • Teams divided among 4 baskets for preliminary round one
  • Top 2 of preliminary round go to the final round

NOTE:  Players can and will knock-out their own teammates.
